Mary qualified with an honours degree in medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1980, having gained first class honours in Intercalated BSc in Medical Biochemistry. She undertook post graduate training in diabetes and endocrinology in Edinburgh and then in Wessex, obtaining an MD in 1988. She was appointed Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 1988.
She has always had a particular interest in gynaecological endocrinology, including infertility and menstrual problems, menopausal issues and in osteoporosis. She raised money for the establishment of the first DEXA scanner in Dorset, at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and was one of the founder members of Osteoporosis Dorset, when the charity was established by Dr Paul Thompson in 1992. She has served as a member of the Committee on Safety of Medicines for 7 years, and has Chaired the Expert Working Group on HRT and Women's Health Issues for the Department of Health for 5 years.
She is a Trustee of the national charity Breast Cancer Care, and has taken part in a number of Department of Health projects establishing standards for care for breast cancer services. She is an independent advisor to the Clinical Advisory Board, Healthcare Commission, a member of the the BAMM Medical Leaders Professional Council, a member of the South West sub-committee of the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards and an external examiner to the University of Birmingham Medical School.
She has a longstanding interest in the delivery of acute medical services, served as Clinical Director at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for 7 years, and was elected Clinical Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004, having previously served as Wessex Regional Advisor and as an elected Counsellor.
